Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

University Measures Towards Affordable and Clean Energy

Energy efficiency standards for renovations and new builds

IZTECH is bound by law to abide by the National Energy Efficiency Legislation: Energy Efficiency Law (Number 5627) and Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (http://www.lawsturkey.com/law/energy-efficiency-law-5627). IZTECH has implemented initiatives to monitor and increase adherence to state-enforced legislations.

Upgrading existing buildings to higher energy efficiency

Feasibility and project studies have started for increasing the energy efficiency of 8 buildings on IZTECH campus. This project has been financed by the World Bank, within the scope of the Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings Project (KABEV) carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

Carbon management and reducing carbon dioxide emissions

The university has implemented several initiatives to manage carbon emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of the university:

Plans for reducing overall energy consumption

IZTECH has been taking multiple measures to reduce overall energy consumption. For instance, IZTECH has been an active partner of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance Project (YEVDES) which aims to heat the university campus using geothermal resources and thus reduce the need for fossil fuels on campus.

Energy reviews

IZTECH Directorate of Construction and Technical Works regularly monitors and reports building based energy consumptions.

Policy on divesting investments from carbon-intensive energy industries especially coal and oil

IZTECH 2019-2023 Strategic Plan states that “The energy efficiency of existing buildings will be increased and the rate of utilization of renewable energy sources will be increased in and around the campus.”

Energy and the Community

National Open Access and Open Science Conference 2022 was hosted by Istinye University in collaboration with Izmir Institute of Technology, TUBITAK and Hacettepe University, on October 20, 2022. This 2022 theme was selected as “Open Access for Climate Justice”

Sustainable Future with Solar Energy Workshop took place within the scope of the BEST For Energy Project prepared by IYTE Energy Society and IEEE- Power and Energy Society, on 26 April 2022. In the event where prominent people in the field of renewable energy technologies and sustainability participated as speakers, a solar energy workshop was held in the afternoon session.

The seventh of our Sust’INO event, organized by the Innovation Community of IZTECH with the theme of “Renewable Energy and Sustainable Innovation”, took place on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at IZTECH Show Center. We seek answers to the question “Why renewable energy?” with the leading companies of the sector.

IZTECH has state-of-the-art facilities for wind and geothermal energy research. These facilities provide publicly accessible paid test and analysis services.

IZTECH has founded, in collaboration with İzmir Development Agency, Wind Energy Meteorology and Environment Conditioning Test and Analysis Center (RÜZMER), with an investment of 1.5M USD. This Center provides services on wind energy efficiency calculations and material conditioning testing.

İzmir Institute of Technology Wind Energy Meteorology and Environmental Application and Research Center (RUZMER) was established on 15.11.2022. The Center received the Guided Project installation support of the Izmir Development Agency (İZKA), which operates under the coordination of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Industry and Technology. RUZMER consists of wind energy meteorology, material and environmental laboratories and aims to become an international center by first supporting the activities of the Turkish wind energy.

EBB Energy and HVAC was established in 2013 as a startup company by the support of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). The supported project was “energy efficient and renewable energy supported refrigeration systems”.
