Participating in Co-operative Planning and Support for Climate Change Disasters

IZTECH participates in URBAN GreenUP project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. Its objective is the development, application and replication of Renaturing Urban Plans in a number of European and non-European partner cities with the aim to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality and water management, as well as to increase the sustainability of our cities through innovative nature-based solutions. Three runner cities – of Valladolid (Spain), Liverpool (UK) and Izmir (Turkey) – will validate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the URBAN GreenUP methodology. Based on their experience, five follower cities, Mantova (Italy), Ludwigsburg (Germany) Medellin (Colombia), Chengdu (China) and Binh Dinh-Quy Nhon (Vietnam), will set up their own Renaturing Urban Plans to replicate the URBAN GreenUP strategy and its green economy approach.

IZTECH Faculty of Architecture and Karşıyaka Municipality Vision Development Unit came together

Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) Faculty of Architecture and Karşıyaka Municipality Vision Development Unit came together at the Synagogue Building in Alaybey. With climate change, precipitation or drought is now seen above seasonal normals, along with dense and unplanned urbanization, it causes catastrophic floods in cities. Especially the rise in sea level and floods and the disasters experienced in Izmir have adversely affected Karşıyaka socially, economically and environmentally. In this context, in order to create a more resilient city against disasters and adapt to climate change, IZTECH Faculty of Architecture collaborated with the local municipality to prepare a permeable surface inventory, future scenarios and response strategies. The first results of this study were presented by graduate students of the Faculty of Architecture at IZTECH; Intervention recommendations regarding the identified fragile neighborhoods were shared.
