Working to Maintain and Extend Existing Ecosystems

IZTECH Sustainable Green Campus Coordinatorship holds seminars on the biodiversity of Peninsula Region (Çeşme, Karaburun and Urla Municipalities). In order to make the IZTECH campus an exemplary campus in every aspect, Rector Baran chairs routine meetings with faculty members in order to protect and maintain the ecosystem and biodiversity. At these meetings, strategies for what needs to be done in order to effectively and sustainably manage biological diversity and natural resources on IZTECH campus, one of the largest campuses in Turkey, were determined.

Moreover, in cooperation with IZTECH TAMIKAM Nature Society, a “Bird Watching and Geographical Labeling Workshop” was organized as the first stage for the creation of the IZTECH Campus Biodiversity Inventory. After the theoretical training, field observation work was carried out in the campus.

İzmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) Architecture Faculty City and Regional Planning Department organized a technical trip to Aydın. The importance of the Büyük Menderes River for the region, the natural and cultural riches of Lake Bafa and Latmos (Beşparmak) Mountains, ecological problems, and social stories from past to present were discussed. Studies were carried out in Miletos, which was a port city in ancient times. The formation of coastal dunes, traditional fishing in the lagoons, the importance of the delta for waterfowl, wildlife, plant diversity, marine biodiversity, the location of Lade Island, the delta protected by the National Park status and related threats were discussed.
